communication

Introduction

Effective communication is crucial in any successful partnership. IEWs and Principals are often extremely busy people with a range of tasks making up their day. How good an idea does the Principal have of what makes up an IEWs day? How well is this communicated to the Principal and the rest of the school staff? IEWs should make sure that they actively communicate with their Principal what they are doing and the issues that come up in their role as regularly as possible. It will be easier for Principals to respond strategically if they are made fully aware of what is happening.

Activities

The following activities have been designed to assist with the improvement of your partnership. These activities have been developed in consultation with over 200 school Principals and IEWs from around Australia. We hope that you, like those 200, find them useful and worthwhile.

Knowing About Each Other

No subject should be taboo in a successful partnership. However, there are often issues that we keep from each other because it seems to ‘make things easier’. This list of ‘ten things’ comes from participants who were involved in the design phase of the Same Kids Same Goals project, do you agree with them?

What does the IEW do at our school?

The role of the IEW is complex and subject to many competing demands from the community, students, staff and the systems that administer them. The IEW role will often evolve to satisfy local needs. This exercise will help both parties more fully understand the complexities of the role as they relate to your school.
