(IEWs) work well together, the needs of the school’s Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander students are better met than when the
Principal and IEW work separately.
That is what leadership in Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander education is all about!
Indigenous Education Workers
are known
by different titles Australia wide. NT — Aboriginal and Islander Education
Worker WA — Aboriginal and Islander Education
Officer SA — Aboriginal Education Worker QLD — Community Education Counsellor NSW — Aboriginal Education Assistant ACT — Aboriginal Home School Liaison
Officer VIC — Koori Educator TAS — Aboriginal Education Worker
Here we use the title IEW to refer to
all of these roles!
IEWs, when effectively supported and
developed are the richest resource your school could have in improving
the well-being and education of your school’s Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander students.
Principals are crucial in this support and development.
This Toolkit has been developed as a result of a
series of workshops held around the country over 2006/2007 and is targeted
at improving the working partnership between the School Principal and
the IEW.
IEW Lesley Walker illustrates the contribution
that a good IEW can make and the importance of working with the Principal.
